Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Azaz on Monday said that the DNCC aims to restrict battery-run rickshaws from operating on the city’s main streets.
“DNCC seeks to play an active role in prohibiting battery-run rickshaws on major thoroughfares to prevent hazards in the city,” he said.
However, he added that the city corporation will explore alternative measures, considering the livelihoods of four million rickshaw drivers.
The newly appointed DNCC administrator made these remarks while responding to journalists’ queries during a views exchange meeting at DNCC Bhaban in Gulshan.
He further said that the DNCC will develop a comprehensive plan to improve civic amenities and introduce environmentally friendly public transport facilities through a democratic process that incorporates public opinion.
Seeking cooperation from all stakeholders in building a just, livable, and humane Dhaka, the DNCC administrator emphasized that the corporation has taken effective measures to reclaim encroached lands and sports grounds and will utilize these spaces for the benefit of citizens.
“There will be no opportunity for anyone to gain an advantage based on political considerations,” he said, adding that strict action will be taken against extortionists and criminals.
Additionally, he announced that all encroached canals would be restored and made navigable.
Local communities will be engaged in the initiative to protect the canals, and measures will be taken to keep waterlogging at a manageable level during the upcoming rainy season, he said.
